All this talk of gyms re-closing has filled me with dread. . Did I get through four months of home workouts? Yes. After the initial period of over- training, I fell into a solid routine and this really helped my head. . However, for me, the loss of the gym went far beyond the physical training (and losing progress). . The gyms closing started to mess with my head. The overtraining turned to paying closer attention to how I was eating, which inevitably lead to panic and over- restriction. Enter the binge cycle. Thankfully I recognised this and knew to act on it FAST. . It scared me how easily it resurfaced, and scared me that I felt out of control. I honestly don’t believe this would have been an issue should gyms have remained open. . I can’t help but think how lucky I was that I had some prior knowledge and a strong support network. What about the people that were struggling with their mental health for the first time and didn’t understand it? OPEN UP- it might seem embarrassing but it’s seriously worth it. . The gyms closing had an impact on A LOT of people far beyond an increased waistband. . The positive for round two is that we can preempt problems that may arise. I’ve written a list of the things I struggled with during the first lockdown (some out-with my control), and am starting to work on this NOW, before a more serious lockdown hits, so I don’t feel caught off- guard. . While I HOPE for so many people’s health that the gyms remain open, mentally start to prepare yourself now. Don’t wait and repeat the same cycle. .
